Letter from the Principal
Downtown College Prep—a charter high school in downtown San Jose—is looking for 8th graders who want to go to college, and who are ready to do the work it takes to get there. At Downtown College Prep we know that it takes ganas – desire and will – to achieve academic success. Everything we do at Downtown College Prep is focused on helping students achieve academically.
Downtown College Prep is a small school with a single purpose: to prepare underachieving students who will be the first in their family to graduate from college to thrive at four-year universities. Downtown College Prep recruits students who are not working to their potential. Most students at Downtown College Prep will be the very first person in their family to go to college and/or had below a C average in their academic classes in middle school.
DCP offers small classes, energetic teachers, and a culture of achievement where all students are held to the same high expectations. Specific characteristics of the school include:
- Small classes (20-1 student-teacher ratio)
- Extended school day (8:45 – 5:00) including a 70-minute Tutorial where students get individualized help
- Rigorous, demanding classes, with a focus on building literacy and math skills
- Strict code of conduct, including mandatory school uniform
- Activities designed to support achievement in core academic classes, including Photography, Leadership as well as several sports teams
- Close connection with parents and community, including College Readiness
Workshops for all families, to help the school and families work together to support students
Downtown College Prep is not for everybody. It is for students who recognize that they can do better, that they have what it takes to succeed, and are looking for a place where they will get the support and skills they need to go to college.
